Please give this a listen! I have loved this song for a few years now and it just never gets old. I promise you’ll love it!

Every once in awhile there’s a band that REALLY grabs my attention. The kind of band I want to share with everyone and no one at the same time…just so I can keep their wonderfulness to myself muahaha. Glasser is one of them. THE SMART BROTHERS-INTERVIEW

I received an anonymous request to put The Smart Brothers on my blog and I’m so glad whoever sent that message did, because I really love their sound, full of heart, home, unfamiliar people, places and everything in between. The Smart Brothers tell us about rockin out with a broomstick, playing on the street and Weezer as a…church band?
Listen to:On my Own
Check out:http://www.myspace.com/thesmartbrothers

1. Who are The Smart Brothers? Where are you from?
J: The Smart Brothers is my brother and I, Lou and Jay Smart. We are from from San Diego, CA.

2. Who are your musical influences?
L: Handel’s Messiah has always been a big inspiration. When I got older I really began to enjoy bands like Rufio, Blink-182, Ra, Finch, Default, Crux, Tupac Shakur, the Game.

J: Beach Boys, Roy Orbison, Dream Theater, Mastadon, Opeth, Les Miserables, Glen Miller, Josh Groban, Tchaikovsky, Chopin, Celine Dion, Calcinha Preta, Mandy Moore, Wilco, Jay Reatard

3. Has music been something you have always done together?
J: We’ve always made noise together. Some of our earliest memories (and home movies) are of us rockin the broom stick.

4. Have either of you ever been in a band before The Smart Brothers?
L: We had a lot of bands together, punk, electronic, indie, metal.

J: Some of them pretty embarrassing too.

5. What kinds of things inspire the songs you write?
J: Existentialism, meditation, Eastern philosophy, coming to terms with religion and God.

L: Girls and love are the main inspirations. Seeing the country and meeting the odd kind of folks you meet traveling has also been inspiring. Getting older and trying to be a better person is a big one.

6. Tell us a little about the song you provided.
L: “On My Own” is a song we wrote together after traveling around in the south for a year. It really captures all the run-ins with the law, the fears, the long distance relationships, the tension, the desperate isolation you get out on the road.

7. What did you grow up listening to?
J: We were only allowed to listen to religious music growing up so it was kind of a mixed bag. Our parents listened to Julio Iglesias and Sousa, a lot of church music though mainly.

L: a friend convinced our Ma that Weezer was a church band because they had a song called, “My Name is Jonah”. The song is really called “My Name is Jonas”, slightly less biblical. In any event, we listened to that album a million times in a row, we were so hungry for normal music.

8. Do you feel the music you listen to becomes part of your own songs?
J: I guess it must, everything about life does. Since we have kind of a diverse playlist, it might not be apparent or immediately obvious, but the Pixies are in there somewhere.

9. How would you describe your sound?
L: Normally we’re very folky, Americana is the new term popping up everywhere. There’s some rock n’ roll in there, lots of harmonies.

J: We started off playing on the street a lot, it always sounds pretty jangly to me, even still.

10. What has been your favorite experience as a band so far?
J: So many to count. I love doing outdoor fests, I love recording, meeting people is the highlight though. There are so many good and intriguing people out there and music gives a door into who these people are, it’s our disclosure that opens an avenue between our individual lives, drawing them together.

L: Crowd surfing.

11. Do you have a favorite song to perform?
J: “Wayfaring Stranger”, it’s an old song that no one even knows who wrote it anymore. It has a certain spirit to it, you know? It feels dusty, it’s accessible, it’s loaded with explosive energy. Plus I get to do a little rock out bit…haha

L: “On My Own” cuz it starts with the phat hood beat

12. If you were to play a show with anyone of your choice who would it be and why?
J: Justin Townes Earle- really like what he’s doing.

L: The Beatles, duh.

13. What do you like to do on your spare time? Any other hobbies or perhaps unusual talents?
L: Free time? I remember what that was like!! Ha, usually we surf whenever we can, fly fish…I like to buy and sell odd items on Craigslist.

J: Bike, run, read, hike, volleyball, sail, foreign films. I love to cook, and I make the best margarita in SoCal.

14. What are your all time favorite songs?
J: “Heavy Heart” by Madi Diaz, “Alone” by Heart, “It Makes No Difference” by the Band, “Get By” by Talib Kweli, “Full Moon” by Sonata Arctica, “You Can Never Hold Back Spring” by Tom Waites

L: “Out My Back Door” CCR, “Don’t Worry Baby” Beach Boys, “Letters to You” Finch, “Sinner in Me” Depeche Mode, “Across the Sea” by Celtic Woman

15. Do you tend to agree on music most of the time
J: Almost Never.

16. What are your current goals as a band?
L: Keep traveling, writing. We’re working in a backing band for some shows, so getting tight with them.

J: Play some shows internationally.

17. Where can your music be purchased?
J: Itunes, Amazon, Cdbaby.com, Last.fm, Bandcamp.com

18. Can The Smart Brothers be found anywhere else online?
L: A couple new tracks from the unreleased album are previewing on Myspace and we are on Flickr, Twitter, Facebook, and Eventful.com.

J: We have a new site with Port City Merchandise launching in a month, pretty excited about that.

19. Any upcoming shows you would like people to know about?
J: We’re heading out on tour and are doing a bunch of college dates in the southeast in support of the new album. Would love to meet up with folks in their hometowns. We’ll be in Pensacola, Jacksonville, FL, Mobile, Montevallo, Birmingham, AL, Gulfport, MS, and Arkansas as well. More dates will be listed soon, in NC and TN.

L: Alzheimer’s Benefit at the Mint in LA, CA on Sept 17 at the Mint, Shakori Hills Music Festival in Pittsboro, NC in October.

20. Anything else you would like to include?
Both: Thanks Amanda, appreciate it!
