CARLEE HENDRIX AND THE WHOLE EARTH CATALOG-INTERVIEW

Ever since Carlee sent me her song Mountains from her new album, Snow cones for a week, I have been playing and singing it non-stop! It’s the kind of song you listen to barefoot outside in the summer with an ice cream cone melting in your hand or in this case a snow cone. Carlee Hendrix and the whole earth catalog’s music is sweet, sincere and full of heart. Keep reading to find out how to download the Northbound EP for free and how to get your hands on a copy of the newest album, Snow cones for a week.

1. Where are you from?

Bermuda Dunes, California.

2. Who are your influences?

A whole lot of everything.

3.What are you currently listening to?

Lots of old country music, and the new Ceremony record.

4. How would you describe your music?

Donuts + Arts and craftsy-folk-pop.

5. What inspired you to start playing music?

I started doing musical theater & singing as much as possible when I was in kindergarten. I took voice and piano lessons and would sing at charities and luncheons and old folk’s homes and things like that. By the time I was 11 or 12, I was very bored of singing other people’s songs. That’s when I started playing guitar and writing my own.

6. What inspired the songs on Northbound?

Spending a lot of time on my rooftop last summer, and one boy in particular.

7. I noticed on your page that your physical copies of Northbound are handmade, what made you decide to go handmade?

Well, I think it’s much more sincere and personal that way. Not many people buy physical copies of music anymore, and we wanted to make these special for the people who liked our music enough to do so. I also felt the handmade feel really suited our music, and the way we want to do things as a band.

8. What can your fans expect when they come to see you live?

Hand claps, sailor suits or cowboy costumes, and a real fun time.

9.Do you like to set goals as an artist or prefer to just see how it goes day by day?

I think I fall somewhere in the middle. The general goal is to just keep putting out music (on a lot of different mediums,) and touring as much as possible.

10. What instruments do you play?

I mess around with a few different instruments, but in the catalog I usually play guitar or banjo. Ignacio plays bass and keyboards mostly, Jan plays drums and glockenspiel and other little percussion things. We switch around a lot and sometimes other friends play with us.

11. If you had to choose one artist you admire to meet, who would it be and why?

Ben Cooper of Radical Face. His songwriting blows my mind.

12. What do you do when you are not making music?

All my time is basically centered around making music, and I really like it that way. I like ride bikes and thrift shop a lot. I’m a homebody for the most part though, and I’m content with good music and/or good company.

13. What was the first Cassette or CD you remember purchasing?

The Carpenter’s greatest hits on cassette. “Top of the World” is still one of my favorite songs of all time.

14. If you were to choose to be anything else other then a musician what would you want to be?

A preschool teacher, or the owner of a sweet vintage clothing shop or vegan bakery.

15. One random fact about yourself.

I can’t fall asleep until I’ve seen the sun come up.

16. Which decade’s music do you find to be the best?

Definitely the 60’s and 70’s.

17. How did you come up with -and the whole earth catalog?

I heard it on a documentary one morning. The Whole Earth Catalog was a concept developed in the 60’s that was kind of like the internet in book form. But really, I just loved the name and thought that in my own context, it suited the music I made.

18. Any shows coming up you’d like fans to know about?

Yes! We’re touring a lot this summer. In June we’re going up California, and again in August when we’ll be going across the country from Arizona to North Carolina. We’re releasing a new CD for our summer tours that will most likely be exclusive to these tours & it’s all about staying a kid forever and living off snow cones for a week. If we’re playing in your city, you should definitely come out!

19. Where else on the internet can your fans find you?

myspace.com/carleehendrix carleehendrix.bandcamp.com - you can download the northbound ep for free here! and we’re on facebook too!

20. Anything else you would like to share?

I think that’s about it!
